Artist Statement
My work is a direct interpretation of what I see with an interest in my culture and self-reflexivity. Through critically exploring and challenging my own personal struggles, I am now able to show how powerful and beautiful my culture is. Chicana/o painters deserve to stand on the same stage, we are just as good to play in the big leagues of such a complex world. We should not be defined by our gender or color but rather by our artistic skills. I incorporate art, religion, and beauty into my pieces.
I utilize oil paints in most art pieces which helps me capture their realistic nature of them. I capture moments in life that stick with me and then express them through a white canvas y add bright oils. “They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality” (Frida Kahlo).
I create art that shows empathy and makes an impact on both social and emotional learning. Art teaches you how to appreciate the many things in life. Because when you look at someone’s artwork you see their struggles, their dreams, their goals, lost or gained. There is a meaning behind everything, and when it comes to my artwork everything comes from my life.
I am giving a part of myself to everyone and it's not easy being vulnerable, but it feels so empowering when you are finished with a piece and just walk back and stare at your creation. There is something so personally satisfying when you have finished one journey and can start a new one. So, what is there to live for if we can't dream?
